Common Questions:
.What is a Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD)? A Sexually Transmitted Disease or STD is a lifelong infection passed from one person to another during oral sex, sexual intercourse, or anal sex. Some are curable, some are not.
.How will I know if my partner has an STD? Since most STD’s do not have obvious signs or symptoms the only way to truly tell if someone has an STD is through a medical exam and lab testing.
.What STD's are curable? Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, and Syphilis are common STD’s that are caused by bacteria. These can usually be cured with antibiotics if treated early. If these STDS are not treated early on they can have serious, long term problems such as blindness, infertility and encephalitis (swelling of the brain).
.What is the process of having an STD test? Call the Health Department to make an appointment if you need an STD test. This test is CONFIDENTIAL.
.How can I prevent getting an STD? Abstinence (no sexual activity) is the only way to be 100% protected from getting a STD.
.Are all STD's tested during my visit? Not all STD’s are tested during a regular STD check. Talk with your Health Department provider regarding additional testing.
.How long does it take for lab results to come back? It depends on the specific test. Some test results are the same day and others could take up to three weeks.
.Can my lab results be sent to another doctor? Yes, a release of information may be required.
